Uniforms

Scouting uses two types of uniforms commonly referred to as Class A (“Field”) uniforms and Class B (“Activity”) uniforms.

The class A (“Field”) are our dress uniforms we wear for ceremonies and when we want to go out and be recognized as Scouts.  They are associated with Pride in the way one looks and solemness in the way we treat ceremonies with the respect they deserve.

Adult leaders who take official Council trainings will generally need to wear Class A (although if it’s a multi day event, you’ll often be told Class B is OK for day 2 and later.)

These uniforms are strictly controlled by Scouts BSA, although realistically, most units take certain liberties in the name of saving money and convenience (you didn’t hear that from us…)

Class B (“Activity”) are our informal wear.  We use them at camp outs, when we expect to get our uniforms dirty, or when we don’t want to be so formal.

Unlike Class A, we get to determine our own class B uniforms.  Scouts BSA has (almost)  no say in what we wear.  The only mandatory requirements for us is that:

  • Whatever we choose, everyone has to wear the same thing.
  • The shirts should be yellow or orange to increase visibility.

We’re in the process of determining our class B uniforms.

Class B Uniforms

Mandatory Patches for Cub Scouts

These are the Class A patches you’ll need to purchase regardless of which den your cub scout is in.

Council Patch

Our council is the Greater New York Council (GNYC).  Their patch goes on our left shoulder.  Link.

Three-digit Custom Unit Numeral

This shows which unit your cub belongs to and is worn on the left shoulder.  Our unit is 611.  Link.

World Crest Emblem

Worn by all registered youth and adults to symbolize membership in the World Scouting movement.

Worn by all members centered horizontally over the left uniform shirt pocket and vertically between the left shoulder seam and top of the pocket.  Link.

Scouting America World Crest Ring

Official ring emblem that frames the World Crest with Scouting America branding.  Link.

Loaner Uniforms

Uniforms are not cheap, and we’re sensitive to that.  Unit 611 has a bunch of uniforms in storage that we’re able to loan out to families in need, both at the Cub level and Scouts BSA level.  Ask any adult leader you see at a meeting to see if we have something for your Scout.

We ask that when you’re done with loaned uniform pieces PLEASE return them to us.

By the same token, if your Scout has a uniform they don’t need anymore because they ranked up or left Scouting, if you could donate your unused uniform pieces to us we would be GREATLY appreciative!
