SUMMARY:Orienteering Basics
DESCRIPTION:We will be learning the very basics of orienteering.  The main skills we’ll focus on are reading a map and orienting a map with a compass.  Then\, we’ll put those skills to use and navigate a beginner’s orienteering course at Alley Pond Park.  Things to bring: \n\nCompass (I have a base plate compass\, but a thumb compass might be easier.)\nPrint out the map and legend.\nCanteen with water.  Around a liter.\nInsect repellent with DEET.\n\nLions and Tigers should consider: this will be a lot of walking.  Depending on how “lost” we get\, it will be at least 2 miles (probably more) on uneven terrain and hills. \nIt’s tick season and there are ticks in Alley Pond.  Accordingly\, clothing should be: \n\nClass B uniform (long pants!)\nHat\nComfortable sneakers\n\nWe will be meeting at the Alley Pond Adventure Course parking lot.  It’s a bit of a drive\, so if you can provide car pooling for some people\, we would really appreciate it! \n
